India’s Energy Security - by Dr. A

The India Club is delighted to invite all its members for a talk to be held on India’s Energy Security by Dr. A. Gopalakrishnan.

Energy is an indispensable requirement for economic development and growth. The quest for energy security assumes even more importance for countries that are currently experiencing rapid economic growth like India. Although India is currently the sixth largest energy consumer in the world, the country has to substantially increase its energy supply (especially electric generation capacity) to meet the growing needs of domestic consumers and industry besides attracting foreign investment to sustain the current economic growth rates for the next couple of decades. How will the country meet its goal in its quest for energy security?

India’s energy system is currently dominated by coal-fired power plants followed by hydroelectric power stations. Nuclear power and renewable energy sources contribute a modest share to the total capacity. Coal is likely to stay as the dominant energy source for the foreseeable future, although lack of progress in meeting environmental standards can potentially dampen the growth of coal industry in India. The prospect for nuclear power growth in India has acquired an interesting international dimension following the recent Indo-U.S. nuclear rapprochement. This talk will highlight various issues concerning India’s energy sector, and discuss opportunities for growth and investment in these areas.

Distinguished Speaker : Dr. A. Gopalakrishnan, an electrical power engineer who obtained his M.S. and Ph.D degrees from the University of California at Berkeley and worked in USA in various technical and managerial positions in the University of California, U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in California.

In 1976 he returned to India and spent the subsequent 24 years in various technical and senior management positions in various public sector organizations in India, including being Executive Director at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) of the Government of India. He also served as the Chairman of the 15-nation Drafting Committee of the International Atomic Energy Agency ( IAEA ), for finalizing the text of the International Convention on Nuclear Safety, which subsequently came into force upon its ratification by most of the nations having nuclear power plants and associated facilities. During his long career, Dr. Gopalakrishnan has also been associated with several academic and research institutions in advisory capacities.
