Dear members and friends:

India Club is delighted to announce the Singapore Launch of a landmark

Invisible Hand: Groundwork for a New Economics” (published by the
Princeton University Press). Bloomberg has called the book “alluring",
the World Bank’s chief economist called it a “remarkable tour de
force", and the Nobel Laureate George Akerlof said the book “deftly,
with the carefully chosen anecdote, and the sparing but subtle thought
experiment …again and again dispels the myth that the invisible hand
of free markets leads to the best of all possible worlds - indeed,
often far from it".

Time: 12:30-2:00pm

Date: Wednesday, April 27th 2011. (Lunch will be served).

Dr. Kaushik Basu is currently the Chief Economic Advisor to the
Government of India, and one of the world’s pre-eminent economists,
especially in the fields of Development Economics, Game Theory (where
he originated the “Traveller’s Dilemma"), Political Economy and
Industrial Organization. In order to take up his responsibility with
the GoI, Prof. Basu is on leave from Cornell University, where he holds joint
professorships in Economics and International Studies, and is Director
of the Program on Comparative Economic Development. He obtained his BA
(Hons) in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi and M.Sc and Ph.D.
in Economics from the London School of Economics.

He has been Visiting Professor at “Harvard, Princeton and MIT” and the
founding Executive Director of the Centre for Development Economics at
the Delhi School of Economics. Most pertinently, Prof.

Basu is an engaging speaker and writer, whose ability to distill
economic jargon to layman’s language is one of his most distinctive
traits – as evidenced by his columns for BBC News Online, Hindustan
Times, and Business Standard.

We look forward to your participation in the Book Launch, and the
stimulating discussion with Prof. Kaushik Basu that we are confident
will follow.
