INDIA CLUB, Singapore is delighted to welcome Dr. Amit Mitra, Minister of Finance, Commerce & Industries of West Bengal to talk about, “The New Bengal: Restoring Economic Vitality".

Dr Amit Mitra has been Finance Minister of West Bengal since 2011, after a distinguished career as a Professor of Economics at Franklin & Marshall College in Pennsylvania, following a Ph.D. in Economics from Duke University, MA from Delhi School of Economics, and BA (Hons) from Presidency College, Calcutta. During his college years, Dr. Mitra was a debating champion, and at Franklin & Marshall College he received the Sears-Roebuck Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1990. Both his parents, Haridas and Bela Mitra, were stalwart members in India of the Azad Hind Fauj (founded in Singapore 81 years ago by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose), and his father was sentenced to death by the British for treason against the empire (later commuted to a life sentence upon Gandhiji’s intervention).
