India Club welcomes Dr. Madhu Kishwar

India Club, Singapore is delighted to welcome the prominent Indian academic and social activist, Madhu Kishwar, for an informal talk about social issues in contemporary India.

Venue: 35 Jalan Puteh Jerneh, Chipbee Gardens, Holland Village
Time: 7pm
Date: January 30th, 2012

Madhu Purnima Kishwar is Senior Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), and the Director of the Indic Studies Project of CSDS. In this capacity, she has convened a series of international conferences on “Religions and Cultures in the Indic Civilisation". She is also the Founder President of the Manushi Sangathan, which is a forum for research-based activist interventions, working for democratic reforms that will promote greater social justice and strengthen human rights in India, especially for women. And, since, 1979, she has edited the journal “Manushi", focusing on Women and Society with the goal of bridging the gap between academics and social activism. Her recent interventions over the past decade have focused on Laws, Liberty and Livelihoods – with a particular emphasis on freeing the livelihoods of two vulnerable urban communities – street vendors and cycle-rickshaw pullers – from needless bureaucratic controls that make them susceptible to exploitation and extortion.
