India Club is delighted to welcome poet, novelist and children’s author Sampurna Chattarji

India Club is delighted to welcome Sampurna Chattarji, one of the world’s leading children’s writers, and a widely published poet and novelist. Sampurna’s translation of the Bengali children’s classic Abol Tabol (by Sukumar Ray, Satyajit’s father) is now a Puffin Classic called Wordygurdyboom!, and she has also authored a slew of popular Ladybird books for children. Sampurna’s latest novel for young adults, Ela, has received rave reviews, and her two previous novels, Rupture and Land of the Well, have also been well-received – as has her recent collection of short-stories based in Mumbai, Dirty Love. Sampurna began as a poet, with three well-loved collections of poetry – many of which were later published in an anthology of Indian poetry featuring India’s top 50 poets. Her poetry (published originally in English) has been translated into German, Welsh, Irish, Scots, Manipuri, French, Tamil and Bambayya!

The author will read from a selection of her works (including Wordygurdyboom, some poems and parts of short stories), and we will then have a free-flowing Q&A session. Children and “young adults” are particularly encouraged to attend (and will be admitted at a concessional rate).
