India Club welcomes Rahul Jacob, author of “Right of Passage”

Rahul Jacob was the Travel, Food and Drinks Editor of the Financial Times (London) from 2003 to 2010 , and this is a delightful collection of his evocative travel essays published in that newspaper and elsewhere. Rahul is currently the South China (including Hong Kong) bureau chief of the Financial Times, and has previously worked at FORTUNE and TIME magazines (the latter as Asia business editor), after completing a Masters from Columbia University’s Journalism School, and a BA(Hons) from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi.

Our friend Deepika Shetty’s review of the book said it “shows how journalists wanting to be taken seriously as writers can make their columns work in book form". The Asian Review of Books called it “both delightful and erudite, just the thing to take one’s mind off the bland and homogeneous experience of global air travel". Outlook (India) described him as a “natural cosmopolitan, straddling cultures, countries and continents with an ease that could put a diplomat to shame". The former Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten says, “This is a wonderfully entertaining guide and companion, both for old hands and first-time visitors…Jacob observes the new wonders of the world with wry humour.” And fellow travel-writer Pico Iyer said, “Rahul Jacob seems to me an archetypal traveller of our times, so conversant with East and West that he dissolves the distances between them.”
I can attest that an afternoon with Rahul is unfailingly fulfilling and enlightening.
