India Club welcomes Sunethra Bandarnaike, at Indigo Blue Art Gallery

India Club, Singapore is delighted to welcome Sunethra Bandaranaike of the Sunera Foundation to deliver a talk on “The Bandaranaikes & India: an inside view on the joys and occasional tribulations of neighbourliness", as well as to discuss her foundation’s work for Children with Disabilities.
Sunethra Bandaranaike is the eldest daughter of Solomon WRD Bandaranaike (founder of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and 4th PM of Sri Lanka, 1956-59) and Sirimavo Bandaranaike (PM of Sri Lanka, 1960-65, 1970-77 and 1994-2000). Her sister, Chandrika Kumaratunge was President of Sri Lanka (1994-2005) and brother Anura was Speaker of parliament. Her paternal grandfather was Maha Mudaliar (the chief Sinhalese advisor to the Governor) of British-ruled Ceylon, and her maternal ancestor was the key signatory on behalf of the Sinhalese to the Kandyan treaty that established British rule in 1815. Sunethra herself obtained a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Somerville College, Oxford, and was Coordinating Secretary to the PM during Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s 1970-77 tenure. But she subsequently chose not to enter politics herself, and focused more on her social work with children and adults with disabilities.
